Okla. school’s bible handouts over, thanks to FFRF (Jan. 7, 2013)

The Freedom From Religion Foundation ended bible handouts at Cross Timbers Elementary School in Tecumseh, Okla.

A class of 5th grade students was presented with Jehovah's Witness bibles during the school day at the elementary school. Students were instructed to write their names inside the bible and take them home.

FFRF Staff Attorney Andrew Seidel contacted the district's superintendent, Tom Wilsie, in an Oct. 26, 2012 letter. Seidel reminded Wilsie that public schools have a constitutional obligation to remain neutral toward religion, especially around impressionable, young students. Seidel said the school should not allow anyone to enter the school to distribute religious literature.
