Action Alert

Contact Senate committee to oppose DeVos nomination for education secretary NOW!

We ask you to take a moment right now to take one very simple action to safeguard our secular public educational system. Please ask the Senate confirmation committee to reject Betsy DeVos' nomination for education secretary. DeVos, a national leader of the voucher movement, would be the very embodiment of a fox guarding a chicken coop.

The head of the Senate's Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, which held her confirmation hearing Tuesday, announced the committee will delay a vote till the Office of Government Ethics has completed its review of her vast wealth and finances. Ask the Senate committee to quash the DeVos nomination. Nomination votes are being fast-tracked, so act now!

DeVos is a graduate of Calvin College who wants to use tax dollars to "advance God's Kingdom" via religious education. DeVos failed in her effort to tamper with Michigan's secular Constitution in 2000, seeking to repeal safeguards against public funds flowing to church schools. DeVos as secretary would spearhead Trump's outrageous proposal to redirect $20 billion in federal spending from secular public schools to vouchers — primarily benefiting religiously segregated schools.

DeVos has a clear record as a theocratic, anti-gay extremist. To review FFRF's public statements and letter to the committee with further details, scroll to the end.

She and her family, heirs to the Amway fortune, are major donors to senators who'll be voting on her confirmation. Five of the 12 GOP members of the Senate HELP Committee— Richard Burr, Lisa Murkowski, Tim Scott, Bill Cassidy and Todd Young — each received more than $40,000 from the DeVos family during the past four years, according to FEC records

Please contact the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and tell them to reject DeVos.

If you only have time to contact one or two members, contact Chairman Sen. Lamar Alexander  or the ranking member, Sen. Patty Murray.

A minute or two of your time could make all the difference!

As a U.S. citizen, I urge the HELP Committee to reject the nomination of Betsy DeVos for secretary of education. DeVos would embody a fox guarding a chicken coop. The billionaire leader of the so-called "school choice" movement and her husband have publicly stated their wish to spend public tax dollars for the unconstitutional purpose of "advancing God's Kingdom." She has worked diligently to promote voucher schools, most of which are religiously segregated, over our secular public schools. DeVos lacks not only commitment to our secular public educational system, but the educational credentials that should be expected of any education secretary. She should not be given a federal platform to tamper with or destroy our secular public educational system.
