Keep religion out of Alabama schools

Please take action today to keep a religious message out of Alabama’s secular, public schools.

Tell Alabama lawmakers to vote against a bill that would encourage schools to put the phrase “In God We Trust” in the state’s public school classrooms.

The Alabama House of Representatives has already passed HB 228, a bill that would encourage every public school in the state to place the phrase “In God We Trust,” in every school building. It is now up to the state Senate to stop this bill.

Even though the phrase is, disgracefully, the national motto, there is no question of this bill’s religious intent. While many are calling for real-world solutions to protect public schools from real-world problems, this bill reflects the views of many lawmakers that their god will solve these problems.

Please take action to oppose this attempt to insert religion into Alabama public schools by contacting your state senator. The Senate could vote on this bill any time, so they need to hear your voice right away. You can find your official by going to this link and entering your address.

You can find more information about this bill here.

MESSAGE

Please feel free to cut and paste the talking points we've provided below.

As a concerned Alabama resident, I am writing to strongly oppose HB 228 to put the phrase “In God We Trust” in the state’s public school classrooms.. Even though “In God We Trust” was adopted as our national motto in the 1950s, it carries a blatant religious message that has no place in our secular public schools.

This bill’s clear religious goal is anathema to the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and marginalizes the 21 percent of young Americans who are either atheist or agnostic, according to a recent study. These students do not trust in any gods and no message to do otherwise should be expressed to them by their government.

Public schools are facing real problems that demand real solutions, not prayers or trust in a god. Placing “In God We Trust” in public schools sends the message that we can offer students no help other than prayers. Please vote against HB 228.
